The orientation on the Hayama Campus was completed from June13 to 19. JSPS fellows extended their friendship beyond the fields of research and met 109 researchers and 9 SOKENDAI students of various nationalities through the week-long program, attending Japanese language classes and culture experiences such as a tea ceremony, calligraphy, and folding paper crafts. Moreover, they participated in a two-night home stay with cooperating local citizens in Hayama and Yokosuka. After the orientation finished, they dispersed to the recipient institutes/organizations nationwide for two months of research activities.

About the impression of SOKENDAI
"The environment of Hayama Campus looks like my university that can be relaxed and this orientation has been well-organized." "I enjoyed many little kinds of Japanese dishes at the welcome party." "SOKENDAI is a wonderful institution with a modern approach to scientific research."
About the special lectures
"The lecture of media in today's Japan was my related theme, I heard it interesting. The lecture of Polar region was impressed about the problem of global warming; global-scale problem, it was good to be talked about at such an opportunity."
About the poster presentation
"I have received some advice of another aspect from the fellow who is researching the robot, as I am researching about ape's perception of emotional expressions in the face by cranial nerve study and psychology."
"We are so young everyone thought my research was the best that our discussion was sometimes over-heated. This session is a kind of bird view as we usually devote into our own research field. " "The poster presentation provides a unique opportunity to experience research in other fields."
"Though participants visited about their research throughout the orientation, the poster session really emphasized the diverse backgrounds and interests."
An interview to a Japanese student who participated from SOKENDAI"This was my first challenge. I was poor not to answer promptly in English by being asked the particular point of my research, though I have practiced the entire English presentation only. I learnt a lot how to make a poster presentation to see the other foreign fellows."

About the home stay

"The home stay was my favorite part of the orientation. It was a unique opportunity to see how people live in Japan. This is not the kind of experience one gets as a tourist."
"The family I stayed with was extremely generous and a lot of fun. I have stayed in contact with them during my time in Japan, and join a cycling group with the father (who is a very fast biker!) on Sundays. The home stay was very valuable."
