Course Groups
A course group is a cluster of courses categorized across a wide spectrum of specific areas that are intimately related to each other. In some course groups, a coalition of schools/departments bring along their own courses to build up the group; you can enjoy special subjects of an adjacent academic discipline to broaden your perspective, quickly grasp a general idea of each discipline and/or get an objective overview of various disciplines. Course groups usually consist of elective coursework and practicum, which are either subject-specific or cross-disciplinary, so that you may choose any combination of courses and take as many classes as you would like, depending on your academic interests and concerns. Your choice of course groups may have enduring consequences not only for your PhD work but for your research activity in the future.

Travel Expense for students
When a SOKENDAI student travels to the Hayama Campus or the location of the other departments for the purpose of "receiving a lecture or research supervision," and incurs travel expenses, part of these expenses may be reimbursed after course.
1. Purpose
We will pay the expense amount in full or provide partial support for round-trip transportation and lodging expenses to SOKENDAI regular students (except those currently on leave of absence) who have registered for course subjects. Travel expenses will cover travel expense from the affiliated department to the course location (students taking intensive courses, seminars, etc. at the research institution affiliated with their department and students who can take courses in their department remotely via video conference are not eligible for compensation for these expenses). Expenses will be paid based on application by the registered student.
2. Eligibility
SOKENDAI Regular students (except those currently on leave of absence).
3. Amount
Travel expense payment amount: Limited to
a maximum of 50,000 yen per course
.
4. Student Travel Expense Payment Procedure
To request payment of travel expenses, please submit the following documents by the separately specified deadline.
- -(Form 1) Application form for payment of travel expense for SOKENDAI activity
- * Students may be asked to submit a "participation application" attached to the course offering notice in lieu of this form for subjects in which short-term intensive courses are offered. Please obtain the approval of your supervisor (requires the signature or seal of the supervisor) and submit the application to the Academic Affairs Section in the Academic and Student Affairs Department to register for such courses.
- -Lodging Facility Receipts
- * When staying overnight to take a class, it is necessary to submit the receipts for lodging expenses.
- -(Form 2) Local Remittance Registration Application
- * Please submit an Local Remittance Registration Application when receiving payment for travel expenses, etc. from SOKENDAI for the first time and when changing information of the account that has already been registered.
5.Important Details Concerning Travel Expenses
- SOKENDAI Students who are eligible for support for student travel expenses (round-trip transportation and lodging expenses) under the rules of SOKENDAI will be provided support for expenses based on the rules of SOKENDAI. Payment for expenses will be deposited into the designated financial account after confirming attendance (attendance roll) during the course term. Please note that travel expenses will be reimbursed after the student has paid them.
- When the distance from the location affiliated with the department to the course location exceeds 100 km one-way via JR train, the amount to be paid will be calculated based on the regular train fare with the student discount applied. Please submit the request for a certificate of qualification for a student discount to the Academic Affairs Section at each research institution for your department in advance.
- Meal expenses during the course term are excluded from travel expense support and are the responsibility of the individual student.
-
When it is necessary to stay overnight to participate in an intensive course, actual expenses based on the amounts on the receipts received will be paid, up to the maximum amounts listed below.
➤ When using a lodging facility owned by the research institution, etc.: up to a maximum of 4,350 yen per day
➤ When using a lodging facility other than those noted above: up to a maximum of 8,700 yen per day
[Important Notes Regarding Lodging]
